![]() Although maybe I'm biased because I'm a monster sympathiser. ![]() We pretty much only see him as the monster that everyone believes him to be, when he is just a lonely child. This adaptation is very much a summary, and the monster's true development is completely neglected. I found Ito's ending just as enjoyable as Shelley's, so I wouldn't say this is a bad thing. That said, it does a good job of summarizing the first half of the book, but then the second half starts to change somewhat significantly. ![]() ![]() Ito's artwork is captivating and complicated, and it really adds to the story of Frankenstein. This is also my first Junji Ito work that I've ever read, so I can initially say that the art style is incredible. The main reason I'm writing this review is because in the majority of the reviews I've seen, no one has read the original book. ![]()

And so when I kept seeing some of my trusted book recommendation sources proclaiming this was a five start read, I knew Take My Hand would be my next read. My overall reading during the last couple of years has not included many historical fiction novels, I just could not get into them. I am easily tempted by a shiny #NewBookReleases (and also like to share them here!) and I also have to be in the right mood for certain genres. Are you a book planner or a mood reader? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The child, it should be mentioned, is not completely hidden since the citizens are allowed to visit it. It appears just taken for granted that these are the terms, enforced, like other moral norms, by the “impersonal authority” of the norm, to use the phrasing of philosopher Elizabeth Anderson. The narrator suggests there is no clergy in Omelas to enforce these terms, and there is also no mention or hint of a deity who speaks directly to the people to lay down this law (even if a god did so, of course, that wouldn’t de facto make the law moral). ![]() Some of them understand why, and some do not, but all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery. For this reason, Omelas can also be thought of as a dystopia or an almost utopia. In this story, the narrator describes the utopian city of Omelas, whose very utopianism, prosperity, and unspoiled happiness depend on the perpetual misery of a single child, hidden and locked away in a dark, squalid basement. Le Guin’s short story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas (1973) poses an interesting and thorny moral conundrum. ![]() ![]() This webpage summerizes the problem(s), the details and the ideas behind how God's Number was found.
