The family recover except for Alfred, who dies in Dr Quimper’s arms. Lucy cooks a curry for the evening meal and the family all become ill. At first the police believe the woman is Martine, but Miss Marple produces Lady Stoddart West, the real Martine, alive and well. A letter from Martine indicates that she may have had a child by Edmund, meaning the child could inherit Rutherford Hall. There is speculation that it might be Martine, a girl that was engaged to one of the sons, Edmund, that died at Dunkirk. Her identity is a mystery, but she is probably French, based on her clothes. Lucy searches the grounds of the Hall on behalf of Miss Marple and finds the dead woman’s body in the family sarcophagus. The head of the family is the ailing Luther with a brood of fratching sons and daughters. Rutherford Hall is inhabited by the Crackenthorpe family. A friend of Miss Marple, Lucy Eyelesbarrow, is despatched to Rutherford Hall to gain access as a housekeeper. Train timetables indicate that the trains would be passing Rutherford Hall at the time of the murder. The police find no evidence of a murder, so it is down to Miss Marple to investigate. When her train passes by another train, going the same way, she sees a man strangling a woman on the other train. Elspeth McGillicuddy is one her way by train to visit Miss Marple.
